I was pleased that the little hummingbird was feeding just before 7 this morning. She had a trying time today, as she suffered being trapped, handled and banded later this morning. However, I am assured by my son that she was back feeding in less than an hour after her ordeal.
David Holmes and Bruce Peterjohn told me that the measurements of the R5 (an outer tailfeather) definitely indicated that she was the Rufous species of Selasphorus. They were also able to tell that the bird was female.
They tell me that this species is hardy and able to cope with "single digit" temperatures, as long as the sugar water doesn't freeze.
We hope she stays a little longer.
