Jay Sheppard is braving the cold and wind to check out the Oxbow Lake Nature Preserve (for Horned Grebes - no luck yet). But he did add a new species to the oxbow list:

Cackling Goose

If you are looking for a Cackling Goose to tick off your Anne Arundel List for 2008, bring your scope. The only open water will be along the far western/northwestern shore. That's where the waterfowl will be concentrated. It flew over around 9:45 a.m.

On another note. On Saturday's Tridelphia CBC, Jay and I found 3 Cackling Geese in a flock in a horse pasture. Jay spotted one of the little guys flying in a flock overhead and we followed them to the pasture. So if you need a tick for Montgomery County, here's the directions for where you might look. Near Unity, MD, at the intersection of Sundown Rd and Howard Chapel Rd (both turns off of Rte 650 Damascus Rd). Looking on Google Maps, the address appears to be 3902 Sundown Rd, Gaithersburg, MD 20882. There's plenty of horse pastures in that immediate area, so you might have to check them all out. Be careful, there's not a lot of off-road parking available.
