We drove over to Noland's Ferry this AM and since the ferry did not appear
to be running, we just walked along the
bike/hike/scooter/horse/birding/anything else trail. We are happy to report
that we caught a BALD EAGLE in the act of refurbishing the nest just north
of the 46-mile marker. We watched it moving furniture around up there for a
while and then he flew off to the north for some more furbish. Whatever that
is.
Other highlights- a six woodpecker day as we missed only the Redheaded.
Heard but couldn't find a WINTER WREN. CREEPER and the usual suspects
including both KINGLETS were also seen. Saw absolutely nothing but boats on
the river.
We found the famous flock of HORNED LARKS at Oland Road and I found one
Longspur in there but couldn't get a good enough look at it to tell which
one. I could see that it was markedly different from the larks and seemed to
have some Longspur coloration, but somebody needs to cut the corn lower for
me to get better looks.
As we approached Westminster a flock of SNOW GEESE flew over us. Plenty
of Red-tails and Kestrels also dotted the trip.
Don't know what happened to the warm temps we were supposed to get today. It
was foggy and in the forties.
And yes, I do know that the ferry at Noland's doesn't actually run any
more. I think it stopped last week.
