I went out to Viollette's Lock at first daylight this morning and enjoyed an hour of birding before work on a "pleasantly" cold morning (no real wind to speak of and a calm river). Just upstream from Viollette's lock on the Potomac River I saw the following:

2 Pied-billed Grebes
4 Mallards
25 Greater Scaup
18 Common Goldeneye
11 Ruddy Ducks
45 Redhead

Upriver towards Riley's Lock I saw a few smaller gulls so I walked up the towpath to get a better look and found 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS floating in with a group of Ring-billed Gulls.

Other birds of note included:
2 Great Blue Heron
2 Downy Woodpecker
1 Hairy Woodpecker
3 E. Bluebird
1 Belted Kingfisher
2 Winter Wrens
