Talbot Bird Club trip to the Fields of Caroline County 1 - 18 - 09

 Hi all  today  1 - 18 - 09   three hardy birders  met  trip leader Danny Poet  for  a  Talbot County Bird Club trip out to the  cold windswept  farm fields   north of Ridgely [ wind not too bad today  though]  to scout them  for field birds. The   Lapland Longspur  of the this past friday  did not  put in an appearance  today .     Highlights of birds seen  however were . 

 Great Horned Owl seen by 3 observers  in route 
Snow Geese    80     flyovers 
Merlin     1     sitting in field    eating on recently caught prey at    Marblehead road 
Red tailed Hawk     3      one in  a tree in  the front  yard of a house on a  thin branch . Odd looking 
Kestrel      1
Horned Lark   250     most at Marblehead Road 
Flicker     3
Cardinal    2
Tufted Titmouse    2     a yard  near Sparks and Clarks  lane 
Eastern Bluebirds    12
white Throated Sparrow     50  rough guess  
 Junco   20        dittio 
Purple Finch      3       two brown types  one male    yard near Sparks and Clarks 
Meadowlark       1  Clarks Lane   in growth of   drainage ditch between two field s

After the group left at 11:00 AM    I birded My way home .  Road by the Ridgely Airport

Cherry  Lane near Tuckahoe State Park 

Red shouldered Hawk      1     sitting in the top of a small tree 

 Back in Queen Annes County  on Greenville road  near  Ruthsburg  the  in a field near a frozen puddle  was an interesting group of birds  together looking for water to drink .

Turkey Vulture      3
