I was birding on the Eastern Shore on Jan. 23-24. Here are the highlights:

Ocean City Inlet (visited Friday 3-4 PM, Sat. 11-12 AM): Friday about 30
Long-tailed Ducks, many loons (mostly Common) and Red-breasted Mergansers.
Saturday was more interesting, with a female Eider (I think it was a
Common), Great Cormorant, Surf Scoters, Black Scoters, American
Oystercatcher, a smaller number of Long-tailed Ducks, many loons and R-b
mergs, about 40 Brant.

Ocean City Bayside: About 400 Brant, 2 Oystercatchers.

West Ocean City Pond: Pond was 90% ice, but still a good collection of
puddle ducks plus 3 Canvasbacks.

Assateague Island State Park: Another 400 Brant, seen from just over the
bridge. Merlin, Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow.

Cambridge: Tufted Duck and Eurasian Wigeon. Another birder showed me the
Tufted and gave very good directions to the Eur. Wigeon at the Visitors
Center. He said the Barrows Goldeneye was at the Yacht Club and they didn't
want birders on their piers, so I didn't try for it. Oakley St. had 100
Canvasbacks and 1 Redhead, all lured very close to land by a photographer
bribing them with food.

58 species seen, including very few land birds.
