MDOsprey,

It has been a while since I have announced any eBird developments here, but
there have been a large number of recent improvements going on behind the
scenes. Many of these are summarized in our annual report for 2008:
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/the-state-of-ebird-2008-read-this

The most recent exciting development is this one:
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/new-ebird-maps, which is the top story
at www.ebird.org now. This mapping tool makes it possible to quickly explore
the exact locations of all eBird reports for any species in Massachusetts!
Looking for certain species for tomorrow's Superbowl--eBird can help!

Try starting with the eBird bar chart for Massachusetts and click on any
species name to see the map:

e=location&bMonth=01&bYear=1900&eMonth=12&eYear=2009&parentState=US-MD&count
ries=US&states=US-MD&getLocations=states&continue.x=30&continue.y=7&continue

A selection of the other recent improvements include:

1) A year selector from your year lists, so that you can view your year list
for 2008, 2007, or any other year
2) A group of friends birding together can now share (copy) their checklists
between accounts, minimizing data entry:
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/new-feature-ebird-checklist-sharing
3) It is now possible to upload data from a number of birding software
programs, including Avisys, Birdbase, Pocket Bird Recorder, Plover, as well
as any excel-formatted files
4) The bar charts have been recently revamped and improved:
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/ebird-bar-charts-updgraded
5) A Flickr group feed that shows recent rarity photos right on the eBird
home page (www.ebird.org)--and has lots of Ivory Gulls (from Massachusetts)
now!

Please do check it out. Even if you don't contribute your own data, you can
benefit hugely from what others have contributed. And if you are willing to
contribute also, the usefulness of your sightings will be maximized, both
for you and for others. Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Best,

Marshall
