Hi Everyone,

I spent most of Saturday working west looking for crossbills and a few hoped-for county birds. Here are several higlights from the day:

Black Hills Regional Park, Montgomery Co.--6 Pine Siskins flying over near the Visitor Center in the early morning (my county closeout)

Hagerstown City Park--Mute Swan, three Northern Shovelers

Terminus, Cumberland--5 hen Common Goldeneye (my county closeout); Common Goldeneye appear to have been present here since J.B. Churchill and David Yeany reported 8 birds on 1/19.

Blue Lick Road east of New Germany SP--I ran into Jo Anna Leachman and we hiked a nice area of hemlocks. One White-winged Crossbill flew over, calling, about 1 mile west of Avilton Lonaconing Road. Tom Feild did some cross-country skiing at New Germany this day and reported seeing two WWCR feeding, followed by a flyby group of seven. The feeders near the east end of Blue Lick Road held at least 16 Pine Siskins and a female/immature Purple Finch. The powerline cut off Blue Lick Road had an unexpected Field Sparrow. (Note: This road is currently impassable by car from the east end beyond the "Not maintained in winter" sign. It is pure ice and I'd strongly advise proceeding only on foot for now.)

Good birding,

Bill
