Hi Folks,

I stopped by Oxbow Lake (near Laurel, AA Co.) this afternoon for the first
time this year. I saw the same water birds that Marcy Stutzman has been
reporting recently, along with two Greater Yellowlegs and two Wilson's
Snipe. Of greatest interest, however was hearing the laughing call of a
Common Moorhen coming from the extensive vegetation in the lake. The call
was just right for moorhen, and I'm sure it was not a coot. Sadly, I only
heard it once, and I did not have a tape with me to try to coax out another
call. The visibility looking into the sun was awful at best, and I saw
little opportunity for trying to see the bird. With all the surface
vegetation, the habitat is ideal for moorhen, and it is here that Jay
Shepard found a Purple Galinule five or six years ago. This is mostly a
heads up for Jay and Marcy who visit the lake regularly, and to anyone else
contemplating a visit.
