We do our FeederWatch survey every weekend, and this weekend
and the past weekend have been especially fun. In addition
to yard bird #102 today (HERMIT THRUSH, going after worms
and holly berries), we had our first CEDAR WAXWINGS come to
our holly, and the past few weeks we've had a male/female
pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS feasting on the berries as well (a
first for us) and checking out our two nest boxes.
Also of interest, a female YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (Myrtle)
has been following around our YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER,
probing at the holes in the evergreen viburnum when the
sapsucker isn't looking. We're still getting regular PINE
SISKINS (4 today), and a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and BROWN
CREEPER both visited the yard last week.
Also the past 2 weeks, including this weekend, lots of
COMMON GRACKLES (over 100), EASTERN STARLINGS (about 50),
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS (couple dozen), and BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS (handful) have swarmed the feeders in a mixed
flock, pushing everybody else out.
Conspicuously absent the past several weeks: Cooper's Hawk,
although the feeder birds still regularly get spooked by
something...
This is in (West) Laurel, PG County.
