Following up on reports by Dave Czaplak and Tom Stock, I went with a friend
on Saturday afternoon to look for the Trumpeter Swans on the Potomac near
Violettes Lock.
We walked down river past the mile-21 marker to the gas line cut and then
down to the river. We had excellent views of the four Trumpeter Swans and
the five Tundra Swans as well.
At one point the were all together in a group and you could easily see the
difference. We did need the scope as the birds were across the river near
the Virginia Shore.
We also had a group of about 15 -20 Common Goldeneye fly in and land near
the swans; a nice treat. There were lots of Common Mergansers,
and what appeared to be a male Eurasian Wigeon, among some other ducks way
across the river. Many thanks to Dave and Tom for posting in the first
instance!
