Thanks for the info Bill and Brad. I drove out there today and had stunning
views of at least 12 White-winged Crossbills, probably more - they were coming
and going (around 3PM). 4 were males. I sat quietly under the hemlocks and
pretty soon the birds were feeding right around me - almost touching distance,
quite something. I got some great photos.
Minor point of clarification, the birds were at the southern end of Preston,
where it intersects with Fountain Head Road, as described, a small grove of
hemlocks on edge of golf course.
On the way back I checked Greenbrier - Common Loon still there, also an Osprey
eating a fish on a roadside post near Myersville.
