Hi All:

I spent the last two days birding throughout Maryland. On Tuesday I started in Baltimore County predawn and then spent most of my time in Hartford, Cecil and Kent Counties. Highlights for me included AMER. WOODCOCK, TRUMPETER SWAN, MERLIN AND RED-THROATED LOON. Other than the two sides of the Susquehanna River (Lapidum & Port Deposit) I hit alot of different areas and quickly moved onto the next. The following is an abridged list of day one. Day 2 will be a separate post as soon as I find the time.

Lorelly Road - BALTIMORE COUNTY - I selected this road off of the map at random to try for owls on my way to Harford County. No luck with the owls but I did here 2 - 3 A. Woodcocks displaying at 6 AM. (A county bird).

Lakeside Industrial Park - Hartford County
  Trumpeter Swan 1

Lapidum Area of Susquehanna River State Park - I was hoping for the rarer gulls that were seen over the weekend but had no luck. The gull numbers seemed low in numbers while I was there. I started here and then went to the Port Deposit boat docks in Cecil County and then back to Lapidum by way of Conowingo Dam (which had scattered (Ring-billed, Herring, Great-black Backed Gulls, a few Bald Eagles and mostly D.-C. Cormorants) and Stafford Road.
Bonaparte's Gulls 40 (rough estimate) some in both counties
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Stafford Road one of them singing
  Hermit Thrush Stafford Road
  E. Phoebe (Two of them at Lapidum and the rest singing along
  Stafford Rd.

Along the waterfront in Havre de Grace I saw 155 A. Coots.

MERLIN 1 First seen cruising over a ballfield and then cooperatively perched in a tree for some nice scops views)
  Belted Kingfisher 1
  White-breasted nuthatch 1

YMCA wetland on Rt. 279 just off of Rt. 40: There is a very small wetland behind the YMCA building - CECIL COUNTY
Swamp Sparrow 3 (A county bird and closeout #72)

C & D Canal Mooring Basin off of Rt. 286 (south of Bridge near Chesapeake city) - CECIL COUNTY
RED-THROATED LOON (in basic plumage) (Thank you to Bill Hubick for posting for me earlier) (A county bird)

Old Telegraph Road at the Bohemia Mill Pond Crossing- CECIL COUNTY
  Great Egret 1
  Pied-billed Grebe 2
  A. Kestrel 2 (at different locations along the road)

Bohemia River- - CECIL COUNTY (Bill H.'s and Mikey L.'s Commn Loon from last w/e was long gone).

Eastern Neck NWR - KENT COUNTY
I finished the day here arriving 15 minutes before sunset. On the entrance bridge in I saw 9 Bonaparte's Gulls and 2 Greater Yellowlegs. The next 45 minutes I spent scoping waterfowl on the Chester River from the end of Bogle's Wharf Road. It was very quiet and peaceful as the sun set behind me. Here I saw the following:

  Common Loon 15
Scaup - all appeared to be greater 155
Common Goldeneye some in various courtship displays 7
  Long-tailed Duck 7
  Bufflehead 180
  Ruddy Duck 3

Several miles outside of the refure my final bird of the day/night was a calling GREAT HORNED OWL

. It was a great day and I stayed the night near Chestertown. I will post my April Fool's Day list the first chance that I get.
