A relatively new guide that could help is "The Young Birder's Guide 
to Birds of Eastern North America." It's by Bill Thompson III, the 
Editor of Bird Watcher's Digest and it's published by Houghton 
Mifflin in the Peterson Field Guide series.

It's written with a light touch and doesn't patronize or talk down at kids.

Give it a look if you haven't seen it before.
