I had a first this morning in our Bethesda backyard in Montgomery County. I had been seeing and hearing a Northern Flicker in the neighborhood for several days. Suddenly this morning two males and a female landed on the tree right outside our window and all three were raising their head feathers and spreading their tales. Clearly the two males wanted the female to make a choice. They moved around the tree and flew back and forth to other trees. One of the males came to the house and drummed on our metal gutter. I think that really impressed the female because it appeared that he won out.
