Along the entrance road toward Riley's Lock, I encountered a small flock
of White-throated Sparrows. Nearby, but not associating with the
sparrows, was a somewhat larger bird that at first impression looked
like a Veery. I didn't get a good look before it disappeared, and I
thought it was too early for a Veery, so I disregarded it. Later,
however, on the path west of the creek that runs from the canal back
toward River Road, I got a better look at a thrush that really did look
like a Veery. When I got home, I checked the "Yellow Book" and found
that the "early date" for Veery is April 9, so I guess the birds I saw
probably were Veery's. (What is the plural, Veeries? Doesn't look right.)
Other than that, the best birds there were a singing L. Waterthrush and
a Horned Grebe, plus at least 15 Yellow-rumped Warblers. They seemed to
be everywhere I looked.
Later, there were not many species at Hughes Hollow. Best bird (if you
can call it that) was a singing Brown-headed Cowbird.
