Subject: EAGLES NEST CAMPGROUND

This message is prompted by the recent good news regarding birder
access to the new and improved Eagles Nest Campground at the end of
Eagles Landing Road in West Ocean City. I learned from Sam Dyke
(Tri-County Bird Club and Ward Museum) about some of the excellent
diplomacy on our behalf by the Coskrens and Ron Gutberlet. Sam also
told me that the new owner is a Jack Burbage of Berlin, MD. It turns
out that Mr. Burbage is also the new owner of the former Madary
estate, Solomon Farm, in Tunis Mills. This property is in the Miles
River Neck sector of the St. Michaels Christmas Bird Count
circle. My group has received annual permission to visit the farm
during the Count for many years now. I first spoke directly with Mr.
Burbage last December but had no idea he was also owner of Eagles
Nest Campground. Small world, indeed!

I called Mr. Burbage's office today just to thank him on behalf of
MOS. While he was not available, I did have a nice chat with his
receptionist and asked her to relay our deep gratitude to him for his
generosity to the birding community. I promised to leave a batch of
Birds of Maryland field cards with the Eagles Nest (CASTAWAYS) office the
next
time I am in the vicinity.

We are so fortunate to have people like this in Maryland. The pier
at Eagles Nest Campground provides access to one of the finest
shorebirding views on the coast. A little care and courtesy
continues to repay us many times over. Special thanks to Ron and the
Coskrens for their initial and successful overtures to the campground staff.

All the best -- Wayne
