Dave Young and I met at Hughes Hollow after work on Friday, April 24th. We only had one species of warbler and that was a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT; but other sightings more than made up for it. We stayed on the dike between the impoundments for the majority of the time. We started our evening about 6:15 PM with a migrating PEREGRINE FALCON (headed in a northeasterly direction) and finished our evening after sunset with 4 AMERICAN BITTERNS that were circling several times and then headed off in an easterly direction. The A. BITTERNS were easily heard making there loud, raspy flight call ("Sqwark"). Our highlights included:
5 Pied-billed Grebes - calling numerous times - a very cool sound to here from the impoundments
7 Blue-winged Teal
6 Wood Duck
1 Hooded Merganser (female)
6 Great Egrets
4 Great Blue Herons
1 Peregrine Falcon
4 American Bitterns
1 Orchard Oriole - proudly singing incessantly for at least 30 minutes nonstop
1 Savannah Sparrow
