Hi Everyone,

Steady rain this morning (22 April 2009)--though very welcome--was enough of an inconvenience that we aborted our weekly Pemberton walk after about 30 minutes. We (Dana Bronecke, Lisa Guy, Scott Housten, Kara Wehmueller, and I) made up for it this afternoon in the Nassawango area. In addition to the great birds to be expected here at this time of year, we were excited to cross paths with an adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK on Bear Swamp Rd. The bird was hunting from low perches along the edge of a recently cut over area. It was successful in the one swoop to the ground that we observed--it caught and ate something small, possibly a frog. The bird did not vocalize while we were there. We watched the hawk from about 5:30-5:40 pm; I took a few digiscopes as well. The location of our sighting was less than a mile west of Laws Rd.

Have fun,
