Decided to sniff around about 3:30 on Thursday afternoon (4/30). My wife and I were almost driven back to our cars after 15 minutes of walking the river path and being buzzed by every bug happy to see the sun and warm temperatures. Although we did not appreciate our affectionate buggy friends our small colorful avian friends did. When we returned to our car we were delighted to get a great view of a Nothern Parula, who uncharacteristically and unlike most of his breatherten did not make us stretch our necks to get a great view. At one point he actually plopped himself into a shrub not more than 10 feet from our car and stuck around until we were almost bored with his show. On cue, the bugs lightened up and we were treated to a mini warbler show (within 50 feet of the parking lot to the left once you cross over the tracks on Marriotsville Road). A busy American Redstart, followed by a Chestnut sided, Phoebe, two Kingfishers flying overhead like hawks(kinda weird), tons of Blue Grays, more N. Parulas and a fantastic shot of a Bay Breasted. My wife Mary, also spotted a Black and White. Great start to what will hopefully be a fulling warbler season. I welcome any suggestions of where to find choice warblers in and around the Howard/Baltimore County Area (I would love to add a morning warbler to my ranks). Thanks. |
