Hugh Simmons and Ruth Bergstrom led approx 10 people on a very enjoyable birding trip at Adkins Arboretum, where many of the participants also took advantage of the native-plant sale going on there.

The birding was slow but steady, and over the course of the walk a good number of species were seen, including some big favorites. Both Summer and Scarlet tanagers presented themselves, along with many Orchard Orioles (no balts, interestingly enough)--and a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. Several Osprey and Bald Eagles. Maybe the biggest favorite was the BLUE GROSBEAK--several were seen/heard, including at least one of the nicely and subtly colored females. Some nice warblers too--the coolest being the KENTUCKY (3), as well as WORM-EATING and CHAT.

After Adkins, a few of us made some stops on the way home. At Tuckahoe, we found a PROTHONOTARY Warbler. And quite a few birds at a place I think is called Horsehead (Ches Env Center). There (if my memory of the location is correct) we found 2 YELLOW-THROATED Warblers. 2 LEAST TERNS, 1 VIRGINIA RAIL, and RUDDY DUCKS. Later we enjoyed seeing a couple of Nighthawks and a Great Egret.

There was not a fallout or a great deal of activity at any location, but we soldiered on, found some nice birds, and had a satisfying day.
