Hi all,
This morning as I was leaving for the conference, I was driving up my street and saw a tree trimming company
trimming trees near the Tulip Poplar that the YC Night Herons are nesting. I stopped, and asked the foreman if the
tree was destined to be cut down, and he said, "no, just the dead branches and limbs"- I let him know that there is
a family of herons nesting, and hopefully try to limit disturbance to them, and pointed out the nest.
My question is: how much cover do these birds require to protect their young, and have nesting sucess?
I am worried if too much is trimmed it will leave the nest more exposed to predators.
There has been a big move by the county contractors to trim trees in our Bethesda neighborhood, and many have been cut down
(due to disease, old age etc).
I have unofficially declared myself an 'ombudsman" for these birds.
