This is clearly the year for long-legged waders at Hains Pt., DC.
Before today, 7 species have been reported - American Bittern, all 3
egrets (Great, Snowy & Cattle), and 3 herons (Great Blue, Little Blue &
Black-crowned Night). Someone has probably seen Green Heron too, I just
don't have any records of that. Today, the 8th definite species was
added - GLOSSY IBIS. I was standing at the very tip and saw an ibis
flying due south off the tip (I was facing downriver and didn't see the
bird until it had passed over my head). I was hoping it would turn
right and head into VA (gotta work on those Arlington & Alexandria
lists), but the bird stayed on the DC side, heading to PG County.

Other birds of note:
1 1st cycle BONAPARTE'S GULL feeding on the floatsam at the tip
1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK - perched in a tree near the 2nd bathroom on the
river side (always a pleasure to see a pearched nighthawk)
2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS - calling repeatedly and flying around the
fenceline behind the 2nd bathroom on the river side
1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW - along the fenceline around the big mulch pile near
the maintenance road)
Migrant warblers were in low numbers - YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACKPOLL,
REDSTART, NO. WATERHRUSH & YELLOWTHROAT
0 shorebirds, which was disappointing

Good birding,
