I did some early morning birding yesterday in Garrett County. (I
actually did a lot more birding in the area on Saturday). The most
interesting bird yesterday was a Ring-necked Pheasant at Finzel Swamp
(walking around in the grass near the ballfield). I've seen/heard
only one singing Alder Flycatcher in the swamp so far this year.
Virginia Rails were vocal there on Saturday (at least 3 calling) but
not on Sunday. I had some Catharus thrushes on Saturday in the
Potomac SF including one that I thought looked pretty good for
Bicknell's (but the view was way too brief to be certain). I was
unable to relocate it. There were also some resident Hermit Thrushes
and Veerys and at least one Swainson's Thrush.

I also birded today some in Green Ridge State Forest but it wound up
being mostly an exploration by car. I got swarmed by mosquitoes at
Bond's Landing and was a bit put off by all the holiday weekend
campers camping in my birding spots (some of which are camp sites).
Nothing unusual ... Worm-eating Warblers, Pine Warblers, Hooded
Warblers (typical Green Ridge stuff). Birding is never really boring
... but I think I need a new project (so I'll be taking some of the
routes David Yeany has set up in Western MD). I miss working on the
atlas so this should be just what I need !
