In today's (June 9) Metro Section of the Washington Post, John Kelly reports on a pair of Red-tailed hawks nesting on the Rayburn building (the large building on the south side of Independence Ave, opposite the Capitol and catty-corner from the US Botanic Garden). The article also features Peter Vankevich, of the Library of Congress, who has been monitoring the birds.
I have been suspecting a local breeding pair, since I've been seen 2 red-tails interacting all this winter and spring, in the area of the Mall and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI).
I also suspect there may be a local pair of Cooper's Hawks. There were 2 interacting all this winter and spring, and I saw one just this week soaring over the NMAI. I'm keeping my eyes open.
