Dave,
I was at Piney Run Park yesterday along the north shore and the Avocet was not there. After seeing your message this morning I checked the upper end of the lake at White Rock Road and did not see the Avocet there either. A tall shorebird could find shallow water in many parts of the lake. Did the photographer say in which part of the lake the bird was seen? Was the observer in a boat?

I just received this notice of an American Avocet at Piney Run Lake seen yesterday. Barry Hoskins sent a photo to Audubon's Action Alert Coordinator.
Not sure if this has already been posted. The photo (not included here) showed a nice adult avocet, which was clearly close to the observer!
Good luck.

This is cell phone picture, but wanted to share this image of an American Avocet observed on Piney Run Lake in central MD on 7/09/09. First we have seen this at our local shallow lake.
