Funny to hear about lack of insects. This morning as i was driving to the BRUNS MARC station it seemed like every insect in the county was intersecting my cars path. For 7 miles on MD 17 windshield impacts were almost constant. I had not noticed this happening much at all this season until today...

About the Swallows & Swifts
At NIH the numbers of Barn swallows nesting in the nearby parking garage seem to be way down. I've not actually noticed any birds nesting or otherwise this year.

At home i have a nesting pair of Chimney swifts at the house and the evening skies seem full of the usual numbers of these "best flying" birds...
