Hi Folks,
Since no one else has posted the results of yesterday's Poplar Island trip,
I'll give a few of the highlights. Many thanks to Gail and Barry for
coordinating the trip; sadly, car problems kept them from being with us.
Highlights: The KING EIDER continues and was photographed by several of us.
Shorebirds were plentiful and included one AM. OYSTERCATCHER, half a dozen
BLACK-NECKED STILTs, four AM. AVOCETs, at least half a dozen STILT
SANDPIPERs, several dozen WESTERN SANDPIPERs, many still with excellent
color, one RUDDY TURNSTONE, several SANDERLINGs, and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE
first spotted by Jim Stasz in flight, and then picked up by Bob Ringler in
the scope.
There were seven BLACK TERNs counted, all sitting in a small cluster and
sporting a variety of plumages, and a single basic plumage BONAPARTE'S GULL.
An ending highlight was a SEASIDE SPARROW perched in the open.
I think Mike Burchett was the official counter, so I'm hoping he'll have the
numbers soon.
Thanks are also due to Jan Reese who conducted the trip, and acted as a very
effective time-keeper to make sure we got all the birds we came for, which
we did!
