I can't help you on the Texas birding.

But your second question about a Maryland birding trail - there is one 
under development. I know each MOS chapter was asked to suggest 
appropriate sites and fill out a form with detailed information about 
each suggested site. Howard County submitted two sites (Centennial Lake 
and the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area) about 6 months ago; I don't 
know what the status is since then and can't recall who the contact 
people are.
