I went to Washington County this morning and quickly found the Loggerhead Shrike at the previously reported location at the end of Sedgwick Way. The bird was in the scrubby open area immediately behind the community center. A small group of people were already present when I arrived and had the bird in view. The bird was easily visible from the parking lot immediately behind the building and we got great views of the bird perched and in flight. At one point the bird swooped down to the ground and captured a grasshopper.

The open area behind the parking lot contains a few mounds of dirt covered with vegetation and grass. The shrike seemed to like the highest perches on these mounds, although before I left I also saw the bird on a high snag in a dead tree to the rear of the open area. I viewed the bird from about 7:45 until 8:30 or so.

I than went to Indian Springs WMA off Blairs Valley Road. The area around the park office and maintenance building was full of birds, but I didn't see any sign of the Yellow-headed Blackbird. Birds included Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, House Finch, Cardinal, Goldfinch, Baltimore Oriole, Orchard Oriole, Mockingbird, Catbirds, Barn Swallows, and a Cliff Swallow (over the lake). I also heard a Common Raven calling, but I never did see this bird. I than bumped into some other birders, who said that the shrike continues to be seen at the same location, so it apparently was present for much of the morning.
