Speaking of hummers, a year or two ago someone posted a handy suggestion
about putting a larger ant moat above a humzinger-style feeder, which is
something I need to do. I now have large ants that can make a bridge of
themselves across the humzinger's small ant moat. However, when I put up the
larger ant moat that my husband made for me, the hummers refused to drink
from the feeder. They approached, looked at the new moat with suspicion, and
darted off. I didn't leave the new moat on for fear they would not feed at
all. And so the ants are back, which really annoys one of the birds, who
won't perch anymore with ants running around.

When making a modification like this to an existing feeder, does it have to
be done at the start of a season? If I put the new moat back, will the birds
overcome their wariness before passing out from low blood sugar?

Speaking of sounds, yesterday morning I heard bluebirds singing. But this
morning, I saw a flock of geese in vee-formation.
