I aborted a drive to Cromwell Valley SP at the last minute to check out
a reported Golden-winged Warbler, arriving at Milford Mill 0845. After
a quick check of the area around an elevated wooden walkway spanning
a small brook and its adjacent overflow area with no success, I retraced
to the parking lot and started a clockwise walk on the 1.1 mile circuit.
Only a short distance along, I encountered Joel Martin, who had made a
quick check along the bordering stream about 1/3 rd of the circuit. As
we checked out a CANADA WARBLER, he said he'd only had a
MAGNOLIA WARBLER and a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. No
sign of the Golden.

On my very studious and painstaking observation of the circuit, I only
saw occasional small flocks of A. ROBINS sifting thru and a pair of
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES checking out a knothole. By a
strange twist of reverse alchemy, our target bird had become a LEADEN-
WING DODO. The noise of the nearsby beltway, combined with the un-
believeably loud singing of the cicadas, pretty much ruled out hearing
much, even if present. Had more sightings of butterflies and robberflies
than birds!

Loath to exit the park , I made another half-circuit before returning to
the parking area and was rewarded with--finally--my own sightings of
the Chestnut-sided and the Magnolia, accompanied by the Carolina Wren
and a couple of Downys. Only a total of FOURTEEN spp.!!
