Like Mike Bowen, we spent time on our deck last evening in West Bethesda observing the limited amount of sky we can see between the trees. We saw one of Mike's groups of Common Nighthawks -- 13 birds -- and a few Chimney Swifts, and enjoyed an after-dusk visit by an immature Cooper's Hawk that swooped through the yard near our feeder. Most interesting was the steady stream of large groups of Common Grackles flying from West to East heading for their nighttime roost. Conservatively we estimated well over 1,000 birds.
