I don't have many hummingbirds, only 2 recently. However, the 2 I see
now are very different. One is tiny and slender, a prototypical bright
green/white adult female. The other is much larger, rather pot-bellied
(maybe as much as twice the weight), and rather dull green in color.
Its throat and breast have no real white, but instead are off-white or
very light gray. It doesn't appear to have any markings on the throat
as would a young male, and I can't see much white at the tip of the
tail, if any. I don't know anything about the immature HBs - the
females are hard enough for me. Can anybody tell me what this second
bird is? I assume it's Ruby-throated, but don't understand the size
difference or the color scheme.
Thanks,
