Jane Kostenko and I were volunteering at the annual Woodland Indian Discovery Day at Historic St. Mary's City. In the afternoon, I was stationed between the Indian halmet and the reconscructed chapel helping out with archery. During a lull, I noticed a large sparrow perched on top of Queen Anne's Lace adjacent to the archery area. I had brought binoculars in case there was a decent raptor show, which there wasn't, so I glassed the bird and immediately noticed the bold facial pattern of an adult Lark Sparrow. The bird stayed teed up on the QAL briefly then flew toward the hamlet landing in the top of a cherry tree. Unfortunately, duty called and by the time Jane got there, the bird could not be relocated. I suspect that it was a bit edgy since there were droves of people there. Perhaps tomorrow when numbers will be back down to very few, if the bird is still there, it might be more cooperative. It was a county bird for me! It would have been for Jane
 too :(
