Dear All

A quick check of the radar last night showed that the switch in wind direction had favoured night migration and with some rain drifting across the region there could be birds grounded this morning.

So I sat out on the deck for my breakfast and was disappointed to see nothing at all except for a few local goldfinches etc, and was just about to head back indoors when I nearly bolted on my Weetabix as a Red-headed Woodpecker flew over the garden! It was heading steadily north and was soon lost from sight.

Having dropped my son at school I quickly called in on a little patch of woodland behind UDC en route to the metro and found a lot of grounded common migrants (that weren't there yesterday). In ten minutes I saw:

Catbird (5), Robin (15), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1), Great Crested Flycatcher (1), Flicker (2) and Yellowthroat (4). Plus two warblers sps in the canopy that I could get anything on.

So I look forward to Wallace's report from Rock Creek in anticipation...

Cheers

Gary Allport
