I scurried down to Collins Road, arriving at about 1:55 PM and stayed until 2:40 PM, with a brief foray down Fiddler’s Hill Road and further down Collins Road to see if the Western Kingbird might have slightly altered his position.

The two dead trees were popular with American Goldfinch, Eastern Bluebirds and even a Chipping Sparrow or two – but not the object of interest.   Another birder was there, confirming our mutual dip.  Maybe it will return – hoping so.

A little history on this bird. I was out doing stream sampling and finished the
wo streams on SERC property. I usually leave out the back gate then turn onto
ollins Road as there are a lot of brambles and a couple of open fields that are
sually good for sparrows. I noticed a small bird fly into a sweet gum tree and
hen I found it, it was a goldfinch. But wait! What's this other bird perched on
he dead limb just below it? Gray back, yellow belly, faint dark streak through
he eye, pale throat. Tyrannus! Then it flew out and caught a bug and I could
ee the white outer tail feathers. It flew back into the original tree just
bove the white mailbox with 408 on it. Then it flew onto one of the dugouts out
n=2
0the field then down into the grass then back up into a tree. I called a
ouple of people and got Dan Haas then had to leave to do my final stream down
ff of Cumberstone Road.
When I got back around 1:00, Dan was there but the bird was not. Then Chris
urray and Joe Hanfman arrived. I had to leave them to get back to the lab to
rocess my samples. I hope they can find it. The habitat there is excellent with
nags all around the field edges, hedge rows and open grassy areas. Naturally
his is the one day that I went out without even the lab camera.
To get there, go east on 214 then turn right onto Muddy Creek Road. When you
ass the sign to SERC (brown sign on the left) you'll go about 1/2 mile then
urn left onto Collins Road. The white mailbox is about 100 feet on the right
nd the tree where I initially saw it is above it.

The bird is currently not being seen, but Tyler Bell found it this
fternoon, perched in the first dead tree snag on the right, after
urning on to Collins.
