Today, appropriately the first of October, is the first date of the
season without hummingbirds in our yard [at least, of the Ruby-thr
variety). As if in compensation for the loss of this Apodiform, a late
Chimney Swift flew past.
Yesterday's hummer came right up to my face almost accusingly and
hovered motionless as if trying to tell me something. Sure enough, his
favorite feeder had fallen to the ground.
