Hi All,
Nancy and I were at the viewing platform at the end of the Tubby Cove
Boardwalk from 6:35 AM to 3:05 PM today (11 Oct '09). We had 70 species,
a new record for us. We had 15 waterfowl species including 7 Blue-winged
Teal, 4 shovelers, both scaup, 9 American Wigeon, a Cackling Goose
(Richardson's), 2 Gadwall, and, the highlight of the day, a single BRANT
with the Canada Geese for the last two hours at the mouths of
Calfpasture and Tubby coves. We had 11 raptors species (counting
vultures as raptors) including 18 Sharp-shinned Hawks, a Red-shouldered
Hawk, 2 late immature Broad-winged Hawks, 5 Osprey (non-locals), and 11
Bald Eagles (one immature neatly pirated a fish from a Caspian Tern
catching the falling prize in the air). We also had a late Spotted
Sandpiper, and 2 Royal Terns. Four Brown-headed Nuthatches put on a
great show for about an hour from 10:45 to noon, caching seeds in
neighboring pines. The complete list from our e-bird submission is
appended.
Good birding,
