We were happy to find the Blue Mash Nature Trail in Montgomery County
almost literally hopping with birds this morning, Monday, 10/12.
Ruby-crowned Kinglets were seemingly everywhere, and we counted 27,
with many more undoubtedly going uncounted. Golden-crowned Kinglets
were less numerous but still very noticeable, especially by their
soft, high call notes.
Sparrows were also gratifyingly plentiful, especially SONG and
WHITE-THROATED. We also had 2 LINCOLN'S, 8 WHITE-CROWNED, 3 FIELD,
and single SWAMP and SAVANNAH.
Warblers were few, with some YELLOW-RUMPED, a couple of
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, and one NASHVILLE, found for us by Woody and
Rae Dubois. (Thanks.)
It was great to have super close views of 4 separate BLUE-HEADED
VIREOS. Most of their comrades have moved on, but we did find a Gray
Catbird and a Brown Thrasher.
Then pond that is now partly obscured by willow trees had, at a
minimum, 12 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 2 NORTHERN SHOVELER. Also many
KILLDEER. The other pond had nothing but a single hen Mallard.
At one point a nearby Screech-owl called back in reproach at Mike's
loud but questionably accurate imitation of its species' whistled call.
