Our 10,000th migrating hawk of the season was counted at 4:40 PM Monday when a migrant Red-tailed Hawk was spotted by Leslie Starr. A clear blue, cloudless sky made for a difficult

watch, and by that late in the day the hawks were few and far between. Careful, patient scanning of the sky paid off, and we thank everyone who stayed so late to get

that benchmark bird.

Also of note was our first GOLDEN EAGLE of the season seen at 12:40 PM heading SSW past the radio tower. After looking through most of my raptor ID books I believe

this bird was a juvenile with dark gray remiges (flight feathers) and a moderate white type tail. (Wheeler, plate 458).
