I apologize for this belated report ..
I arrived at the Salisbury Landfill Monday around 2:30 pm on Mon
10/26. About 2,000 gulls were very active on the dump and, despite
several passes by Bald Eagles, they never left the area for the pond
as they did on Sunday (when there was some but not much landfill
dumping activity). Around 5:00 pm, I looked up from my scope eyepiece
and realized that virtually all of the Laughing Gulls had moved on,
leaving the dump to the domain of the Ring-billeds and the larger
gulls. When I left the dump around 5:30, I checked the pond, and
there were no gulls at all in it.
I had not seen Bill Hubick's photo when I was there and I had seen
one candidate in flight that I hesitatingly but really wanted to turn
into a subadult California Gull, but after looking at Bill's photo,
it was very clear that it was not the same bird, and I am now sure
that it was not a CAGU.
