MD Osprey:
While staring at gulls and contemplating life Monday at the Salisbury
Landfill, I thought about all of the rarity candidates that could
turn up at this dump habitat. The biggest challenge will be subadult
birds and the list includes (tah dah) ...
Black-tailed Gull
Common Gull
Kamchatka Gull
Mew Gull
Audouin's Gull (has been recorded in the Azores!)
Kelp Gull
Western Gull (has been recorded in New York, I believe)
Glaucous-winged Gull (has now been recorded in Europe!)
European Herring Gull (two forms or ssp.: argentatus and argenteus)
Yellow-legged Gull (michehellis and atlantis)
Vega Herring Gull (the MD/DCRC has received a report from this
landfill of this taxon!)
Slaty-backed Gull
Baltic Gull (L. f. fuscus)
Gray-headed Gull (recorded in Florida, I believe)
Mediterranean Gull (has been recorded in the Azores!)
Band-tailed Gull (Belcher's Gull) (has reached FL and CA)
This list is in addition to the more common non-reviewable
white-winged gulls (Iceland/Kumlien's/Thayer's complex and Glaucous);
the even more common Franklin's Gull and Black-headed Gulls; the more
pelagic Ivory Gull (there is a specimen from the Potomac River from
around 1842!); Heerman's Gull, which is more coastal; and the escaped
Silver Gull that used to frequent MD and NJ.
Now, that's enough to scare me and keep me up at nights ... !!!
Happy Halloween, everyone!
