This evening I went to look for sparrows along the C&O Canal west of MD-61
where it crosses the Potomac River in South Cumberland. I was not
disappointed when I found a single LINCOLN'S SPARROW in the shrubby area
near the first railroad bridge west of MD-61. It provided great looks and
afforded me the chance to snap some poor photographs in the waning light.
Sparrows were quite abundant, but the diversity was low. The majority were
Song Sparrow, followed by White-throated Sparrow, and 4 SWAMP SPARROW. This
area is probably very under-birded, but the large shrubby fields next to the
canal seem to have the potential to hold some interesting birds and would be
worth checking out.

Good birding!

David
