Baltimore Bird Club trip to Loch Raven on Saturday, 11-7 encountered many
bow hunters seeking deer and a fair number of birds. Although the bow
hunters were both friendly and careful, I would recommend birding Loch Raven
on Sunday rather than Saturday until Jan. 31, when bow hunting season ends.
The 3 of us who braved the trip saw many seasonal birds, including Hermit
Thrush (2), Winter Wren (4), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2), Brown Creeper
(1), and both kinglets. A big raft of Coots was in the Fishing Center cove
(perhaps 800) and Ring-Necked ducks were numerous (100+). A flyover Great
Egret was a nice surprise.
