When I saw the Red-headed Woodpeckers earlier today they were collecting
acorns and storing them in a cavity in a large dead oak tree(?) - after
placing the acorn in a hidden hole it tapped at it two or three times. In 15
minutes one bird made four trips to pull acorns from a living tree and
return to the snag. I hope this behavior indicates that they will spend the
winter there ...or perhaps they have been there for years.
I can't believe I missed the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
