Over the past weekend i observed a very energetic flock of Titmice at the feeders. As usual they would fly to the feeder and stay only as long as necessary to grab a sunflower seed before racing off. It was impossible to know how many there were, but at one point one of the birds flew to the windowsill and appeared to me to be looking for a place to stash the seed rather than to eat it. The house siding there is brick, so, perhaps, it expected to find a nook or cranny to stuff the seed as it may be able to do on a tree trunk. Anyway it had no luck with that on the brickwork...

Later that morning i heard a RB woodpecker calling, then observed the bird fly away from a bald-faced hornets nest in the top of one of the yard trees. The hornets nest sustained damage in a storm over the last 6 weeks or so, one chunk falling down into the yard. I discovered after i put the chunk in my shed that some cells contained live larvae, as a few hornets hatched. So perhaps there are still some larvae in the remaining nest and that was the attraction for the RB...
