As did Wallace Kornack, who reported earlier today, I saw the
continuing Eared Grebe from the boardwalk at Piscataway Park, Prince
George's County, at just after 11:00 a.m. this morning, Friday,
December 4th. Gadwalls and American Wigeons were numerous, as
reported by Wallace. The Eared Grebe looked healthy enough and
preened often as I watched it. However, I did not see it dive, and
I'm pretty sure it didn't fly. (Doesn't mean it couldn't have, if it
wanted to, of course.)
Other interesting birds on the river in PG County today were 48
Tundra Swans -- mostly adults but with a few darker young birds -- at
the end of Wharf Rd., a basic-plumaged Common Loon off the wooden
pier at the National Colonial Farm, and numerous (4-6?) Red-headed
Woodpeckers near the entrance to Hard Bargain Farm. The woodpeckers
were actively engaged in gathering acorns from the ground and
included at least 2 brown-headed young birds.
In Charles County, I had a very responsive group of passerines
respond to some pishing and (poor) imitation screech-owling at
Marshall Hall on the Potomac at the end of Marshall Hall Rd. The
group contained, among others, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and 2
Hermit Thrushes.
Good Birding.
