Subject: Longspurs and American Pipits in Caroline, QA and Talbot counties
Les,
I spent the afternoon driving around Caroline, QA and parts of northern
Talbot Counties. I located Lapland Longspurs in each county (Talbot - 1
along Church Road at Rte 404, QA - at least 4 along Crouse Mill Road south
of Ruthsburg, and Caroline - along the unpaved portion of Sparks Road west
of Ridgely - many horned larks with at least 2 longspurs and about 20
Savannah sparrows). The best look was at the Sparks road site where it
looks like someone (maybe Danny Poet?) has spread a lot of seed for the
birds.
Also had lone American pipits in the same general location in each county.
One very encouraging note was the number of Eastern Meadowlarks along the
roadsides in QA (at least 70) and Caroline Counties (about 25-30). The
roads are all very passable and birds flocking along roadsides so the
birding is very pleasant with great looks at Savannah Sparrows, horned larks
at al..
Looked for the Short-eared owls near Pemberton Manor with no luck in the
later afternoon. All my birding was by driving so I didn't get many
woodland birds.
Merry Christmas to all.
