Will McPhail & I did the grand tour of DC waters today - as mentioned
by many others the biggest challenge was finding H20 in it's liquid
form. No great water creatures down at Anacostia Park, but the usual
Peregrine was perched over by the Navy Cruiser and the Orange-crowned
Warbler was present.
The Washington Channel over at Hains Point held one female Common
Merganser and a small group of Lesser Scaup. The Hains Point Merlin
was on the golf course and a Cooper's Hawk was fluffing itself low
down in a tree along the road. We didn't see the Cackling Goose, but
admittedly were more focused on a duck search.
We then headed over to Alexandria, VA to view the DC waters. A Horned
Grebe and solitary Ruddy Duck were the best (i.e. only) finds other
than the usual gulls and geese. Another Peregrine was found perched
on the Wilson Bridge conveniently on the span that we think is
technically in DC. Extralimital - Will found a Savannah Sparrow at
Jones Point Park.
By the airport were a few Buffleheads (in DC waters) and a Red-tailed
Hawk. By that point we were frozen & starving so we didn't check out
the Georgetown Reservoir - probably the only open DC water that we
missed today.
Cheers,
Steve Hersey
